Professional Work

Freejam

For three years I have worked at Freejam, a wonderful small team making large UGC games. The time here has allowed me to wear a myriad of hats; from putting together simple flowcharts to dealing with massive spreadsheets, designing monetisation systems to planning AI behaviour trees, all the way to audio design and localisation. My greatest pleasure has been working with all other disciplines, taking the time I spent at Uni trying to understand every part of game development, and my passion for design, and collectively creating awesome things - in the same way we want our players to with our games.

I have worked on three closely-knit games at Freejam, each iterating into the next. From the UGC sandbox Techblox, to the sequel to a beloved game, played by millions; Robocraft 2. The latter has recently been delisted off steam while we work on a true evolution of Robocraft; Robocraft 2: Rebuild.

My Key Responsibilities have included:

  • Writing and maintaining design documents for a variety of feature types, from technical design documents to UI design.

  • Running technical meetings for Programmers and artists on features I'm responsible for, as well as offering clarification and support throughout the iterative cycle.

  • Balancing in-game elements based on in-house and community feedback, ranging from complex physically simulated wheels to sci-fi Plasma Cannons.

  • Design, Code and polish in-house prototypes of new features in standalone projects while managing artist contributions.

  • Writing in-house tools in C# for unity, predominantly for designers to be able to work with complex server data as well as plan future content.

  • Responsible for writing the copy for public areas such as Steam pages, marketing posts and splash screens as well as localising the game into 11 languages using AI systems.

  • Sound design, music composition, and technical audio design and implementation.

  • Supporting the QA team in the run-up to release to ensure consistent quality across the product.
